Job Position: Horticulture Operator Required in UK – Visa Sponsorship Available
Company: Alora Innovations
Salary: £25,400 – £28,500 a year
Location: Norwich, Norfolk, UK
Alora is working on something pretty incredible – we’re developing climate-resilient crops that could help solve world hunger. We’re currently running the first rice field trial ever done in the UK, and we’re creating genetically-edited plants that can grow in conditions that would normally kill crops.
Our ultimate vision? Ocean agriculture – growing food without fertilizers, pesticides, or fresh water. We started in Yorkshire, got shaped in San Francisco, refined in Ontario, and we’re back in the UK ready to make this happen.
The Job
We need a Horticulture Operator who’ll be hands-on with our glasshouses, hydroponics, and field trials. This isn’t your typical gardening job – you’d be working with cutting-edge agricultural science, taking care of genetically-edited plants (mainly rice), and directly contributing to research that could change how we feed the world.
What You’d Actually Do
Daily Plant Care:
- Manage plant cultivation in our glasshouses – watering, pruning, pest management
- Monitor and adjust environmental systems (irrigation, temperature, lighting)
- Collect samples and handle phenotyping work
Research Support:
- Help set up experiments and lead data collection for trials
- Track growth measurements, stress responses, and yield analysis
- Keep detailed records using spreadsheets and tracking software
Field Work:
- Support seasonal planting, sampling, and monitoring at field sites
- Work outdoors in various weather conditions
- Maintain clean, functional growing environments
Collaboration:
- Work with scientists and technicians, providing feedback on plant performance
- Present trial updates to the team
- Report directly to our COO
What We Need
- Degree in horticulture, plant science, agronomy, or equivalent hands-on experience
- 2+ years experience in glasshouse, nursery, or field-based crop care
- Knowledge of pest management, irrigation systems, and plant nutrition
- Strong attention to detail and record-keeping skills
- Comfortable with physical work in warm, humid environments
- Good communication skills and collaborative mindset
- Creative problem-solving approach
Bonus Points:
- Experience with rice or cereal crops
- Research trial experience
- Interest in climate adaptation or biotechnology
What You Get
Money:
£25,400-£28,500 annually plus competitive equity options
Benefits:
- UK visa sponsorship available
- Free parking and on-site canteen
- Company pension and possible equity scheme
- Sick pay and bereavement leave
- Company events and casual dress
- Work from home flexibility on some days
The Experience:
- Be part of groundbreaking agricultural research
- Work in a mission-driven, fast-growing startup
- Opportunities to grow within the horticulture team
- Shape the future of food production
